Invest in a Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats are much easier to program and are far more precise than their conventional counterparts. This easy programmability and precision make them more efficient at heating your home. They don’t have to run as long, so they don’t use as much energy, which saves you money on utility costs. According to Energy Star, smart thermostat users can save up to $180 a year. You can use a smartphone app to program your thermostat when you’re at work so it’s the ideal temperature when you get home.

Make Sure Your Thermostat is Properly Positioned

The location of your thermostat could affect the accuracy of its temperature readings, causing it to under heat or overheat your home. If your thermostat is in the center of the house, it will get a better read of the average temperature. Direct sunlight can cause your heater to turn off before it properly heats your home. Drafts from windows, doors, and air conditioning vents can cause your heater to run too long.

Set Your Thermostat Accurately

In winter months, you should set your thermostat between 68 and 72 degrees, especially if you’re home during the day. When you’re asleep at night or away from home, the temperature should be set between 62 and 66 degrees. If these temperatures seem a little low, start by lowering the thermostat by one degree each day to acclimate. Make sure that the vents are closed in any rooms you aren’t trying to heat, so you aren’t wasting heat.
