Preventive HVAC Maintenance: What You Should Be Doing
The heating and air conditioning system in most El Paso, Texas, homes is the most expensive appliance. You can extend your system’s life, save energy, and avoid inconvenient, costly repairs or replacements with proper preventive HVAC maintenance. Take care of your HVAC system by protecting your outdoor unit, changing your air filter, and getting it checked by an expert.
Protect Your Outdoor Unit
You should check your outdoor HVAC unit once a week for dirt, pollen, grass clippings, leaves, and other debris that could reduce your system’s airflow. This will force the system to work harder, increasing your utility bills and leading to unnecessary wear and tear. If you see anything on top of your unit, rinse it off with a garden hose and trim any vegetation nearby. You can also add extra protection and shade with an awning or trellis.
Change Your Air Filter
Your HVAC system’s air filter catches contaminants like dirt, pollen, pet dander, and biological growth. It keeps your indoor air quality high and helps prevent bad smells, asthma or allergy symptoms, and lots of dust on your furniture. You should change it at least every three months. A clogged filter will reduce your airflow and spread pollutants around your home instead of catching them.
Use an Expert
Problems like a refrigerant leak, leaks in your ductwork, or a malfunctioning thermostat may not be apparent immediately. Without repairs, minor issues will become worse, and your utility bills will increase. You should get your system inspected by a professional at least once per year. Also, call an expert if you notice strange noises, areas that are too warm or cold, or anything else unusual about your HVAC system.
